Department of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy
Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy - Overview
The Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy department of MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai involves 6 faculty members. We are involved in the teaching training program of under graduate and post graduate students. MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai offers Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy which is a 2 years (4 semesters) program. This program is formulated to enable student to gain adequate knowledge, skills and clinical hands on experience leading to an ability to establish independent professional practice in the field of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy. Clinical services offered by the department varies from cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation and fitness programs well as acute physiotherapy care in the intensive care units.

In the era of globalization, developing countries like India face major threats from the rising tide of lifestyle related disorders leading to non communicable diseases. According to WHO statistics for 2011, Non Communicable diseases (NCDs) including cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes account for 53% of all deaths in India.
Early recognition and evaluation of causative factors of NCDs becomes an urgent need of the hour. Modifiable risk factors such as dietary habits, physical activity levels, tobacco alcohol abuse and high stress levels precipitate the development of physiological risk factors like obesity, raised blood pressure, altered blood glucose profile and dyslipidemia ultimately lead to these diseases.
Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality and causes 6% of all deaths. Higher levels of physical activity can decrease incidence of NCDs by almost 25% thus potentially reducing the economic burden placed by them.
Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that can result in energy expenditure. Fitness is the ability to perform daily tasks vigorously and alertly, with energy left over for enjoying leisure time activities and meeting emergency demands. Both are related but different concepts. Physical activity is a behavior whereas physical fitness is a biological trait.
The drop in physical activity is seen to be due to inaction during leisure time and sedentary behavior on the job and at home. Likewise, an increase in the use of "passive" modes of transportation also contributes to physical inactivity.
Benefits of regular physical activity of moderate intensity – such as walking, cycling, or doing sports – has significant benefits for health, at all ages. It helps to improve muscular and cardio respiratory fitness; bone and functional health; reduce the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast and colon cancer and depression; reduces the risk of falls as well as hip or vertebral fractures; and are fundamental to energy balance and weight control.
By becoming more active throughout the day in relatively simple ways, people can easily achieve the recommended activity levels. Hence, at a population level, regular screening of physical activity and physical fitness levels using evidence based evaluation methods should be a public health priority. Early diagnosis and management for health care promotion need to be initiated at all strata of society.
Therefore keeping these objectives in mind, MGM Physiotherapy department has established a new MGM Exercise Testing and Fitness Laboratory to cater to health needs of the society. Physical activity levels are assessed using questionnaires. Health related fitness testing includes various components like anthropometric measurements, evaluation of flexibility, balance, muscle strength and endurance and cardiopulmonary endurance testing using state of art technology.
Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy - Clinical
Clinical services offered by the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy department of MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai varies from cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation and fitness programs well as acute physiotherapy care in the intensive care units. Cardiac Rehabilitation OPD: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Cardiac rehabilitation is a customized intervention to individual patients with various cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and myocardial infarctions, or patients who have undergone cardiovascular interventions such as coronary angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting Cardiac rehabilitation programs aim to limit the psychological and physiological stresses of CVD, reduce the risk of mortality secondary to CVD, and improve cardiovascular function to help patients achieve their highest quality of life possible. Cardiac rehabilitation program offered in MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai focus on: Risk Factor assessment, Cardiovascular endurance assessment, Physical activity assessment and Training and Exercise Training
You can enroll for cardiac rehabilitation if you have following: Sedentary Lifestyle, Overweight, Diabetes Hypertension, Stable Heart Failure, Stable Ischemic Heart Disease, Heart Surgery, Angioplasty, Patients with pacemaker, Operated Valvular diseases, Operated congenital heart disease, Heart transplant. Overall cardiac rehabilitation increases the quality of life and decreases health care costs. Cardiac rehabilitation has many physiologic benefits due to its exercise component. Exercise training has been shown to increase maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), improve endothelial function, and improve myocardial reserve flow. Additionally, cardiac rehabilitation can reduce smoking, body weight, serum lipids, and blood pressure.
ICU Services: The Cardiovascular and Respiratory Department is actively engaged in treating patients in Intensive care unit: CCU, MICU, SICU, NICU, PICU and Kidney transplant units. Evidence based treatment techniques are implemented in ICU as indicated. Special emphasis is given to early mobilization of patients to reduce complications. Peripheral Vascular Rehabilitation OPD: Peripheral vascular rehabilitation focuses on the treatment and rehabilitation of conditions affecting the extremities, such as the arms and legs. It is recommended for individuals who have experienced an injury or surgery to the arms or legs, or who have a chronic condition affecting the extremities, such as peripheral arterial disease or peripheral neuropathy. The goal of peripheral vascular rehabilitation is to improve mobility, strength, and function in the affected limbs, and to help individuals regain their independence and quality of life.
Here at MGM School of Physiotherapy Peripheral vascular rehabilitation OPD, our team of skilled physiotherapists is dedicated towards helping individuals with conditions affecting the arms and legs improve their mobility, strength, and function. We offer a range of treatment options, including exercises, assistive devices, and modalities, to help our patients regain their independence and improve their quality of life. Pulmonary Rehabilitation OPD: Pulmonary Physiotherapy is also known as Respiratory Physiotherapy is the term used to describe the job of a specialist physiotherapist who helps treat, educate and advise patients who have problems with their lungs and their breathing. It is an evidence-based multidisciplinary and comprehensive intervention for patients with lung disease who are symptomatic and often have decreased daily life activities. The aims of Pulmonary rehabilitation are to reduce the symptoms and disability for people with lung disease and the overall goal being optimizing their functional status. It is indicated in respiratory conditions like Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Asthma, Chronic bronchitis, Pulmonary fibrosis, Bronchiectasis, Interstitial lung disease. Post thoracic surgery, Post abdominal surgery
