MGM Physical Fitness Testing and Training Program

Developing countries like India face major threats from the rising tide of lifestyle related disorders leading to non-communicable diseases (NCD). Early recognition and evaluation of causative factors of NCDs is an urgent need of the hour to reduce the burden placed on governmental organisation and health care facilities. Physical inactivity is recognized as the fourth major risk factor leading to NCDs. Increase in physical activity can decrease incidence of NCDs by almost 25% thus potentially reducing the economic burden placed by them. Physical activity is behaviour whereas physical fitness is a biological trait. Post COVID pandemic has imposed additional challenges from viewpoint of online training, reduced outdoor activities and reduced physical activity in work from home culture. MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai has taken up the task of evaluating fitness of healthy Indian children, adolescents and adults as well as people with disease conditions with goal of achieving National objectives laid down in FIT INDIA movement launched on 29 th August 2019.

Following guidelines from UGC notification dated 27 September 2019 for Fit India Campaign in Higher Educational Institutions to promote physical and mental health of all individuals, MGM School of Physiotherapy, Navi Mumbai undertakes ‘MGM Healthy Institute of Health Sciences’ as an initiative designed to identify physical inactivity and promote engagement in simple, feasible health promotion activities

The MGM Fitness Battery has been designed to evaluate five domains of fitness using valid, reliable tests that can assess health related fitness in a time limited frame utilizing minimum apparatus, space and personnel.

Following evaluation, a customised fitness report is prepared for each participant with prescription of tailor-made program based on the results of testing. Normative reference values have been generated and copyrighted for healthy Indian children, adolescent and adult males and females.
